REQUIREMENTS FOR USE OF POCKET KNIVESTo earn his Whittling Chip card, each cub scout must demonstrate his knowledge of the following rules: DO: TO OPEN your knife: Hold it in your non-dominant hand. Open the blade with your dominant hand. Pull the blade out until it snaps into the locked, fully open position. TO CLOSE your knife: Hold the handle in your non-dominant hand. Keep your fingers safely on the sides. Push against the back of the blade with the fingers of your dominant hand. Let the blade snap shut. DO: KEEP THE KNIFE CLOSED, except when you are using it. DO: CUT AWAY FROM YOURSELF. DO: KEEP YOUR KNIFE SHARP AND CLEAN. A sharp blade is easier to control than a dull one. A clean blade lasts longer. DO: CLOSE ALL BLADES BEFORE PASSING THE KNIFE to someone else. DON'T: DON'T: CARRY THE KNIFE WITH THE BLADE OPEN. DON'T: CUT TOWARD YOURSELF. If the blade slips, you may be injured. DON'T: POUND THE KNIFE handle or blade with another tool, rock, or stick. The knife may break and you may be injured. DON'T: THROW THE KNIFE. You could hurt somebody. DON'T: PRY with the point of the blade. The point could slip or snap off and you could be injured. DON'T: PUT A KNIFE IN A FIRE. New knife blades are hardened (?tempered?) with just the right amount of heat at the factory. Reheating them may ruin the temper and weaken the knife. A weak blade could break unexpectedly and you could be injured. |
